The Benefits of Ensemble for
Application Vendors
Make your applications more valuable.
Without rewriting them.
Today's software buyers want to purchase applications that are ready to interoperate with existing systems and business processes – connectable applications. Ensemble, from InterSystems, enables software vendors to quickly create connectable applications – and rapidly increase revenue.
You can transform existing applications into connectable applications, without rewriting them, by simply linking to Ensemble’s integration technology and additional, high-impact services such as adaptable workflow, dashboards, browser-based user interfaces, Web services, and much more. In turn, your enriched applications will easily conform to your customers' application and infrastructure environments, turning them into an integrated ensemble.
With Ensemble-enriched applications, your current customers will be delighted that they can leverage the investments they've made in existing applications and gain immediate benefits from the new functionality and services you've added. Your costs will shrink as customer implementation time and effort is slashed. And you'll attract new customers easily with your Ensemble-enriched solutions.
Ensemble's revolutionary new way to enhance existing applications and create new ones eliminates costly and time-consuming "one-off" integration, "big-bang" middleware infrastructure, or the need to "rip and replace" existing systems with all new integrated solutions. Instead, with Ensemble you realize fast results by rapidly creating a flexible, integrated, service-oriented solution that adds up to more sales, more customers, and new markets.
With pressure on your business growing every day – to meet the changing requirements of current customers, to ward off threats from competitors, and to win new customers quickly – Ensemble will be a welcome addition to your business arsenal.
Ensemble's Solution-centric Approach to Integration
Unlike development and integration products created for sale to large corporations, which are focused on integrating the enterprise using a particular infrastructure (such as J2EE or .NET), Ensemble's "solution-centric" approach to integration has several advantages for software vendors compared to the enterprise "infrastructure-centric" approach, among them:
- Speed. Accelerate time-to-market by starting with results, rather than infrastructure. Improve your success in a marketplace that today is defined by "how fast do you act and how fast do you react."
- A focused, incremental approach. Quickly solve the most pressing problems of your customers and prospects to gain immediate breakthrough benefits.
- Rapid integration and business process enhancements. Avoid time-consuming, costly, and risky application modifications to support each customer. The problem is that customer-by-customer modifications can become prohibitively expensive deal killers, or may even be unacceptable regardless of cost.
- Open standards and infrastructure. Ensemble's solution-centric approach supports multiple and even changing infrastructure environments from multiple vendors. The historic problem in IT is that the word ‘standards' is plural – there are too many of them, they come and go, and change continually.
- Tightly focused, unified solutions. Unlike the infrastructure-centric solutions that are an aggregation of multiple tools and technologies often created by multiple vendors, Ensemble's solution-centric approach provides a tight, focused technology. Ensemble enhances existing applications to quickly and transparently bring them into the world of connectable applications.
The key to these capabilities is found in Ensemble’s core technology. This breakthrough is based on a powerful object model and object repository supporting a unique abstraction and service projection capability.
FORUM Cuts Development and Deployment Time with Ensemble
FORUM Solutions, a subsidiary of FORUM Credit Union, specializes in delivering financial services applications to credit unions and banks across the United States. This software vendor's Total Account Processing System (TAPS® Enterprise Lending) product has been a success story since it was launched in 1999. However, the time and resource investment required to make site-specific customizations for every implementation was unacceptably high. To address this issue, FORUM selected Ensemble as the technology foundation for a newly designed TAPS product.
Ensemble's unified development and integration environment rapidly accelerated the modeling and automation of rules-enabled business processes for FORUM business specialists, as well as their developers. Development time was dramatically reduced with beta testing starting just 3 months after the new product initiative was kicked off. Ensemble's extensive library of pre-built adapters enabled FORUM to quickly deploy their application into their existing customer base as well as target new prospects – both typified by multiple disparate applications, technologies, and data repositories.
FORUM executives know they made the right choice by developing a new version of TAPS that is process-centric and rules-enabled, and enables rapid integration from the start. The Ensemble-based product can be deployed about three times faster than the previous product version. The result is a rapid and measurable return on FORUM's software investment combined with the ability to maintain and build the customer base more rapidly than ever before.
The Fast Path to Integration and Service Orientation
One of the top criteria for selecting a software vendor is that vendor's ability to supply applications ready to integrate and interoperate within a company's business, according to a recent analyst study titled, "How Do Customers Choose Software Companies?" This demand for connectable, essentially pre-integrated applications is driving a change from the traditional 1990s software development and integration model to a new model of converged development and integration technology. Ensemble is the first solution that combines previously separate integration, data, application, and portal server technologies into a single, seamless, easy-to-use environment that delivers rapid time-to-results.
Add-on Integration Technology and Highly Valued Services
Ensemble works with your existing development platforms and standards. It links to your applications and enables you to rapidly add highly valued business process optimization services, without the risk and cost of application rewriting or technology replacement. These services include:
- Web services
- Support for service-oriented architectures
- Adaptable workflow (including human interaction)
- Business process automation/orchestration
- Business rules processing and management
- Dashboards
- Business activity monitoring
- Data transformation
- Portals
All Ensemble services are stored in the repository in an abstracted form as a consistent set of object classes. Once Ensemble is linked to your application, it abstracts that application's functionality into object classes, with the same format as the native Ensemble services, and stores them in the repository.
Reposition Your Application at the Center of the Enterprise
Just as with your application’s functionality, Ensemble represents the applications, Web services, and data sources in your customer's environment as object classes in its database, effectively linking the enterprise to your Ensemble-enriched application. This bi-directional abstraction provides a consistent, unified view of the underlying systems and applications – no matter what platforms, languages, data models, storage architectures, network protocols, or other technologies those underlying systems use.
Once your application resources are available as Ensemble objects, Ensemble automatically "projects" those objects outward as services which can be accessed by external client technology such as Java, EJB, .NET, COM, C++, XML, and SOAP. Unburdened by technology or platform support concerns, you now can focus on optimally positioning your applications within your customer's business, regardless of the IT environment. With Ensemble, your application can participate in a broad range of enterprise business processes, increasing its value to your customers, and its revenue potential to you.
Benefits of the Ensemble Architecture
Ensemble's fusion of previously independent development and integration technology, and its powerful database and object model, dramatically reduces time-to-solution and the management overhead associated with complex development and integration projects. It delivers important technical and business benefits including:
- Ability to sell in the service-oriented world with automatic service-enablement of application functionality
- Reduction of the time and cost of addressing environment and business process variability between customers
- Ability to address and capture new users and markets without changing application code or creating customer-specific interfaces
- Higher customer satisfaction through rapid tailoring of applications using business process definitions, rules, and workflows for specific markets or customers
- Ease of management with visual tracing of business process execution and messages
- Higher return on development investment
With Ensemble, DTI Helps Newspaper Data Flow Freely
Digital Technology International (DTI) is a leading vendor of newspaper publishing software, with operations around the world. The company is committed to helping its clients compete successfully in the modern news dissemination business, which means going far beyond paper and ink. But for newspaper chains, pulling information from disparate sources, and delivering it through different media, is a complicated integration job. By using Ensemble to enrich its applications with integration capabilities, DTI is making it easier for newspapers to stay competitive in the information age.
DTI has dubbed its Ensemble-powered publishing solution “Liquid Media™”. Liquid Media allows information to be drawn from multiple databases and other information sources, at different newspapers in a chain, and automatically assume the correct format for multiple delivery systems – from newsprint to mobile phones.
The Liquid Media architecture is built around Ensemble’s connection, abstraction, and data transformation capabilities. Using Ensemble, DTI’s solutions can access data from any source and transform it on the fly as it is “flowed” to where it is needed. One major advantage of Liquid Media is that it frees data from the isolated “silos” of existing systems, without requiring a standardized data format. The alternative, standardizing databases throughout a newspaper chain, could take years. By enabling rapid connection to a wide variety of systems, DTI’s Ensemble-enriched solution has opened new business opportunities and given DTI a new way to grow its business.
Solution-centric Benefits for You and Your Customers
Ensemble's solution-centric technology delivers immediate results for your customers, rather than hoped for results at the end of a long infrastructure replacement effort. By linking Ensemble to your applications, you instantly present customers with support for multiple infrastructure technologies and the broad range of rich, ready-to-use integration, workflow, and other value-added capabilities they're looking for. At the same time, the value of your applications increase, as they now can be configured to fit within many business processes, and put your customers on the fast path to the connected enterprise.

Maestro Projects Group Becomes Center of Attention with Ensemble
Maestro Projects Group (MPG) is a software vendor delivering a business process automation and software integration platform for credit unions. MPG is tapping the revenue potential of the credit union market whose growth is hindered by routine processes taking too long to complete due to the multiple, disparate applications involved in each process. MPG chose InterSystems' Ensemble as the foundation of its Maestro offering.
Maestro includes a set of services for connectivity and business process automation that integrate credit union systems with third-party applications and data sources. The result is a transparent and streamlined workflow-enabled environment. Maestro also leverages Ensemble's extensive adapter library and its rapid adapter development capabilities. These capabilities, together with Ensemble's business process modeling and orchestration features, enable rapid connectivity and seamless integration between the different applications and data sources typically in use by credit unions.
Because no two credit unions are exactly alike, MPG extends the reach of its product, and its revenue potential, by harnessing Ensemble's business rules engine to easily adapt Maestro services for each customer. In this way, MPG is able to quickly customize Maestro to match the business rules and processes unique to each credit union. In addition, MPG customers can refine the rules themselves, without requiring any programming from MPG, reducing the maintenance costs and total cost of ownership associated with these dynamic environments.

OmPrompt Partnership with InterSystems Launches a Business
OmPrompt, an Integration Service Provider, developed its patented message analysis and classification technology using Ensemble as its development platform. OmPrompt software employs artificial intelligence techniques to analyze sample messages (data, voice, or fax) from partners and create corresponding Ensemble structures for holding and manipulating the actual data. The technology also builds a reference database of all derived message structures to aid recognition and automated processing of new message types, and makes use of the Ensemble rules engine and business processes orchestration. OmPrompt's service offerings, which address the needs of a large and underserved portion of the supply chain market, have already delivered significant business opportunities including a deal with Kimberly-Clark, a $15B global health and hygiene company.
What Kimberly-Clark Europe wanted was a fast, flexible, cost-effective, and non-invasive way to bring more than 100 transportation partners into its electronic supply chain regardless of what system (or lack thereof) they were using. The company estimated that the integration work would take approximately 18 months. But the cost, in terms of human resources, time, and money, was too high.
OmPrompt's solution rapidly automates any-to-any communication of business data, including voice mail or FAX on one end and, in this case, transportation management software at the other end. Using OmPrompt's messaging services, Kimberly Clark is now able to integrate 2 new carriers per day, as opposed to 2 carriers every 7 days using its previous approach – yielding huge cost savings and a dramatic increase in the efficiency of the organization. "With Ensemble and InterSystems as our partner," said Brian Bolam, OmPrompt CEO, "we're delivering a compelling integration solution that finally fulfills the promise of pervasive electronic data interchange."
