Seminar Title: "Application and Organization Fusion for Healthcare" seminar featuring a discussion by Dr. Halamka based on a recent article in Business 2.0 magazine entitled "Under the Knife."

Purpose: Hear what Dr. Halamka did to overcome the cost struggles of his hospital facilities (losing $100 million attributed to Medicare's reimbursement reductions), the silos of information inefficiencies, and the physicians' initial resistance leading to $13.8 million net income in December, 2003. Learn about his ongoing challenge to get hospitals and doctor's offices to share electronic medical records among ER doctors and how patient privacy and politics were and are fluid issues and how he manages these issues.

How: Dr. John Halamka was looking to improve patient safety using IT. He developed CareWeb for low cost dollars and rapid deployment with only 3 developers to create a web interface containing medical records of 9 million patients automating prescriptions, lab tests, IV drops, etc. that reduced medication related errors by 50% since 2001 - removing the guesswork and streamlining the business processes.

Why join us: A Mckinsey study found that CareGroup saved $1m per year by 2002 eliminating 90% of certain kinds of drug errors and reducing ER patients discharge time by 30 minutes via an electronic whiteboard linked to CareWeb that tracks the status of every patient. Instead of making individual decisions that could cost your hospital millions of dollars, listen to one CIO who made a difference.

Who: CIOs, Vice President of IT, Sr. Directors, and Directors of IT who are faced with ongoing challenges to create a convergence of existing systems while integrating the emergence of new systems like a new CPOE or EMR system. According to Forrester, this is one of the upper tier healthcare objectives for IT in 2004.
